Assessment, Counselling, and Psychotherapy Services

Initial Assessment

An initial assessment consisting of a comprehensive clinical interview and self-report questionnaires is conducted to determine your needs and goals for treatment. This is a collaborative process where we work together to understand your particular concerns and how best to address them. The initial assessment lays the foundation for developing a strong working alliance which research has shown to be an important predictor of therapeutic outcome. An additional goal of the first meeting is to determine fit – in the event that your needs would be better met in a different treatment setting, appropriate referral options will be provided and discussed.

Counselling

Counselling services are offered for clients presenting with various life stressors who need additional support in organizing difficult thoughts and feelings, and problem-solving areas of concern. Clients can learn and practice the use of psychological tools to facilitate more effective coping which, in turn, can improve quality of life, reduce distress, and prevent problems from getting worse. Counselling issues may include:

  • Relationship problems

  • Life transitions (e.g., pregnancy, divorce, job change)

  • Assertiveness problems

  • Stress management

  • Perfectionism

  • Loss

Psychotherapy

The primary goals of psychotherapy are to alleviate symptoms of distress, develop insight into underlying causes, and facilitate lasting emotional and behavioural change. My approach to treatment is tailored to the individual needs of the client, drawing on cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic, and humanistic orientations. Treatment plans are developed collaboratively and are revisited throughout the course of therapy. The number of treatment sessions recommended varies depending on the nature and complexity of the problem. I have experience treating a wide range of issues, including:

  • Anxiety Disorders (generalized anxiety, social anxiety, phobias, panic, OCD, PTSD, health anxiety)

  • Mood Disorders

  • Adjustment Disorders

  • Trauma

  • Substance Abuse

  • Personality Disorders
